What is TMJ?
TMJ (Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders), are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement.
Causes and Symptoms of TMJ
Trauma to the jaw or temporomandicular joint plays a role in some TMJ disorders but in most cases, the exact cause of the condition is unclear. A variety of symptoms may be linked to TMJ disorders. Pain in the chewing muscles and or jaw joint is the most common symptom; others include jaw muscle stiffness; limited movement or locking of the jaw; painful clicking, popping or grating in the jaw joint when opening or closing.
TMJ Treatment
Our clinic successfully treats TMJ disorders with deep tissue laser therapy. The laser penetrates deep into the jaw joint and surrounding muscles to decrease pain, reduce inflammation and release spastic dysfunctional muscles. Patients typically receive 2-3 visits a week for 6-10 visits. Most patients see improvements after the first visit. Laser is typically used in conjuction with other forms of therapy such as joint manipulation and soft tissue therapy to the related joints and muscles of the jaw. This treatment is covered under most insurance plans.
